DK BJP also to join in 3-day protest against Anna's arrest

The Dakshina Kannada district unit of BJP too will join the growing national chorus against the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare, with its own form of three-day protest from August 19. Yuva morcha workers will stage a torchlight protest at taluk headquarters on Friday, mahila morcha workers will organize 'Anna Arati' programme on Saturday, and party workers stage a protest at taluk and district headquarters on Monday.

Padmanabha Kottari, president of district unit of the party told reporters here that the party condemned the move by the UPA government to arrest Anna Hazare and his team in an early morning swoop at Delhi's Mayur Vihar on Tuesday. The Congress led UPA government is stifling the democratic right of individuals and organizations to protest peacefully, he said, adding that Anna was within his rights to seek Jan Lokpal Bill mooted by civil society.

Advising the Congress to stop such democratically regressive steps of stifling voices of dissent, Padmanabha said: "Unconditional release of Anna, as sought by the activist would be a victory for the movement that he is carrying out, and this should happen. The district unit of BJP is in consonance with view taken by state unit that all like-minded forces should condemn the measures taken by the Union Government to stifle Anna and this team."

Monappa Bhandary, spokesperson of the district unit said the manner in which Delhi police at the behest of the Union government picked up Anna was deplorable to state the least. The Congress with its anti-people policies is digging its own political grave, he said, adding that the conditions reminds one of what the nation went through when Emergency was clamped on the nation in the late 1970s and all democratic voices of dissent were curbed severely.
